I have an HJC helmet that fits but it does not have a Snell rating, the one I have is HJC CL-31 Racer Helmet, in XXXL (sold as DOT and Snell approved, but according to HJC's site only upto XXL are Snell approved)

I have been trying to find a helmet that will fit, that has a rating, (the 2x loaner helmet might have broken foam because of me)

my head measures 25 and 1/4 inches around from just above my eyebrows, above my ears to the back of my head.

(trust me having a head that a 25 1/4" around SUCKS.  Wearing a 2x helmet is like a yamaka.  I still don't see how a snell rated legal helmet that does not fit over your ears is safer than an unrated helmet that fits.!)

 Humm, I will have to look into one of those,

the problem is I can't get any 2x helmets that clear my ears, so the face guard becomes a major sight line blocker (like most of it)

the STL Loaner 2x helmet sat on my temples, seldom with the chinstrap fastened, and a couple of times on backward(it fit better that way)

If I had my ears removed it might fit, but it hurt to try and pull it on.

I've got about 100 million helmet flyers and catalogs here and that appears to be the ONLY option Snell Rated.

As far as it being safer to run in a DOT only helmet versus a poorly fitting Snell one, technically the rules specify a properly fitting helmet, so in that case you shouldn't be running with either. :(:(

The way things are looking, I doubt I will be autoxing much more.

SafeRacer has them for $499...for that point so do we.  But I get the point.  The only thing I can offer is that you only have to buy a helmet every 15 years.  Tires go about 50 runs. :)

I've spent a ton of time researching this issue and there just seem to be no inexpensive options.  Motorcycle Helmet manufacturers sell on style, not approvals.  Cheaper automotive helmets are low margin versus the manufacturing costs, so they are never going to be able to afford testing and producing an off size helmet.  I wishI had better options.

I also sympathize.  I can't buy socks for my size 15 feet at WalMart and have to pay three times as much mail order.  Same thing for my XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXL condoms. :)

Ok so $550 for the helmet, (after shipping, taxes, or etc)

that depends largely on the car, the tire and the driver. (I was looking at ~$600 for next year for tires, I doubt I will be good enough to go further than local events, for now)

the store fronts I have been to carry small-medium helmets with some larges and maybe an XL, (Indianapolis), same with Nomex suits.

but condoms???   you only need to put it over your weezer, not your whole body, tie a knot in a standard one like the rest of us.  Or do as I do and cut the top off a mountindew bottle and go to town.

Hmm...odd inventory choice on thier part.  We (SPS) sell more L & XL by a wide margin in every helmet. We carry a full selection of XXL's too.  You are more than welcome to try some on at the next event if you haven't already.  I know my new CL15 XXL is much looser on my 7 7/8 head than the CL12 that preceded it.  We also have XXL in the Pyrotect's.  Like I said, I don't see any vendors selling XXXL's that are rated.

 If you were seriously considering the M3 Extra at some point, SafeRacer in Neosho, MO probably stocks them, or I could order one in for fitment testing.  I know that is way more than you intend to spend, but it is a thought that might help.

I tried the Mountain Dew bottle trick, but was so keyed up after drinking a two liter of it that I couldn't concentrate on sex anymore....:)

[:D] ).  They told me they sold mainly medium helmets off the shelf, all the rest were done as custom fit solutions, (but I guess that is all in how much people have to spend on a head covering.)

 personally my head is hard enough I don't need much of a helmet.

Jeff,

 I don't have anything specific on that brand.  Over the years, we have gotten several sample helmets from vendors claiming to be SNell rated and they are not, or are not in all sizes.  Snell is really just a sales point for a motorcycle dealer, unlike for us where the official sticker would be required.

So, it may be fine and may be worth a shot, but make sure you check for the proper snell sticker inside versus the sticker on the back.

The only retail store we have is at every St. Louis Region Autocross in the big red trailer.  You can call our office and make arraingements to stop by our office (It is in Fenton).  (636-343-5095)  We are generally there every day from 8-4.  Disclaimer, we essentially take the whole place to Topeka for the Solo Nationals, so the last two weeks of this month may not be the best time to track us down (unless you are in Topeka)

Thats not the issue. There is a set of rules that the sanctioning body and their insurance company say that we need to folllow. For every given safety rule and proceedure there are probably at least ten viable options. Your unrated helmet may indeed provide adequate protection should you need to use it at an autocross. However, the rulemakers have stated a Snell approval is required and there is nothing we can do about that.

 It's too bad since it sounds like you intend to be a casual autocrosser. While the cost of a custom helmet is expensive, if you were plannng on making solo a lifelong hobby and/or go road racing the cost averages out over the how long the helmet is legal for competition.

One option that you haven't tried is to contact the national office with your helmet problem. See if there are any options. Can't hurt.
